LW support is known for its technical competence as well. They go up to the extend of helping out the customers with editing their apache configuration, MySQL database related work as well. A very good choice for someone who is looking for Rackspace kind of support at a reasonable price.
Liquidweb is obviously a little costlier than a self managed service, with an avg cost of $225-$250 for a medium (2GB RAM, Dual Core processor, 120 GB space, cPanel) server. You might get such a server for around $150 at Startlogic, but that is for purely self managed service. If you are looking for managed service and great support, Liquidweb is the place to go.

Best part of hostgator dedicated servers is the customer support. Hostgator is known to be a customer oriented company, with support staff willing to walk that extra mile with you. With prices less than half of what rackspace would charge for a similar setup, hostgator offers excellent value for money.
Hostgator doesn't allow you as much customization as you would expect, rather allow you to choose from a set of pre-configured options. For most purpose, any one of their four offers should work quite well.

The best part about 1and1 virtual dedicated servers are the price and 100 mbps ports. If you can manage the servers yourself (VPS almost always are going to be self managed) 1and will be a nice option.
They offer the basic plan (256 mb assured RAM - 512 mb burstable, 20 GB space) for $60 per month and advanced one (512mb assured RAm and burstable to 1 GB, 40 GB space) for $100 per month.

VPS comes self managed, as the case with most VPS providers. If you need managed VPS, you may have to take a look at Liquidweb.

If you are looking for a good UK managed host, Hostway is defenitley a good option, even though a bit costly. They had been around for years and had a very good reutation. Of late, there seems to be quite a few complaints about their customer support.
